About Bosnia

Location

Why we love Bosnia

If you have never visited Bosnia before, what do you imagine it to be like? Do you imagine beautiful mountains, dramatic views, blissfully clean air, delicious food, fascinating history and culture and a warm welcome? Because this is what you will find here. Bosnia has been at peace for 13 years. Yes, you will still see destroyed and damaged buildings in almost every town and village in central Bosnia, but do not let that distract you from the fact that people here are getting on with their lives. There are beautiful places and things to see here, and you will be made very welcome.

Countryside

Bosnia's countryside is incredibly varied. Each area has its own distinct look and feel. On our safaris you will see dense forests, 'Alpine' style mountains, huge open valleys, turquoise rivers, dramatic 'moonscapes', mountain lakes, and canyons. On past Safaris we have seen eagles, wolves, deer, hares, snakes and wild horses. We are still waiting to see our first bear but we have seen tracks on several occasions! Bosnia delivers sunsets that you will never forget, and sweeping mountains views that will make you feel like you are standing on top of the world. Take a look at our GALLERIES PAGE to see some of the photos we have taken on our tours.

Food and Drink

Bosnian food is characterised by its simplicity and its intense flavours. Meal times are leisurely affairs here and are treated as such on our tours. All of our food is sourced as close to home as possible, most of it from our town market or direct from local families. Much of it is therefore organic. Here is a selection of the dishes you can expect from us:

Sač: As well as conventional barbecuing, Bosnians also like to use a special covered iron pan called a sač over an open fire. They can be used to cook pies typically filled with meat, cheese or spinach and can also be used to make a kind of 'pot roast' dish.

Verige: Another traditional cooking method, this copper pot suspended over an open fire is used to make thick stews or casseroles such as Bosanski Lonac which contains numerous cuts of beef.

Ćevapi: A Bosnian national favourite. These little rolls of meat (which are best grilled over a fire) can contain beef, or a mixture of beef and lamb. They may also contain a subtle combination of spices and garlic - every butcher keeps their recipe a secret.

Suho Meso: Tender, strong smoked meats. As you will discover, they make a great accompaniment to chilled Bosnian wine and powerful home-made cheeses.

Bosanska Kahva: A must for coffee addicts. Traditionally prepared in specially shaped copper pots, this is the purest possible way to enjoy the taste of good coffee. In contrast to espresso, the brewing process is slow, and a matter of patience and perfect timing.

Šljivovica: This is Bosnian plum brandy, and it is nothing less than a national social phenomenon. From the party-like atmosphere surrounding its creation in back garden stills across the country, to the passing of the finished product around an open fire, especially in winter, Šljivovica brings people together like nothing else!
